Many years ago the BK school yearbook, The Kelligian, included a brief biography of its namesake, Bishop Edward Kelly. It appears to have been reprinted from another source, and it is published here for your reading pleasure.

But the question remains as to whether young Edward Kelly ever played football, and, if so, what position he played. If anyone knows please share the details at MidKnightMedia@gmail.com. Thanks.

Bishop Kelly High School will perpetuate the memory of one of Idaho’s best known religious leaders – the late Bishop Edward Joseph Kelly.

Bishop Kelly, the third Bishop of the Diocese of Boise, was born in the Dalles, Oregon, February 26, 1890. He attended St. Mary’s Academy, The Dalles. In 1907 he entered St. Patrick’s Seminary, Menlo Park, California, then went to Rome to study at the North American College. Bishop Kelly was ordained June 2, 1917 in Rome by Cardinal Pompili.
At the time of his Consecration as Bishop he was among the youngest Bishops in the world and the first native westerner to be consecrated. The Bishop’s work took him into a number of fields. He promoted the teaching of religion by instituting the Correspondence course, establishing the summer institutes for Sisters, and by supervising and writing texts for religion. The summer vacation schools, the high school De Sales Club, and the regular weekly instruction of children are among the religious education programs promoted by him.
Bishop Kelly’s desire to provide adequate and devotional places of worship for the people of the diocese shows itself in the thirty-five churches and missions which were constructed during his administration.
Bishop Kelly’s life of dedication to the diocese came to and end April 21, 1956, as he was preparing to offer Mass. Services were held in St. John’s Cathedral, April 26, 1956.

When former BK football coach Tim Brennan (’77) accepted the head coach position at Caldwell, two questions immediately came to mind: When will the Cougars be scheduled to play the Knights? Who will Brennan have as assistant coaches?

The BK vs. Caldwell football matchup seems likely for August or early September of 2011, assuming neither side blinks during the scheduling process. As for the coaching staff, it has a decidedly BK feel.

Brennan has hired former BK defensive coordinator George Gamber, former BK line coach J.T. Taylor, and former BK linebacker coach (and fellow BK alum) Sean Impomeni for the upcoming season. Former BK head coach Jack Parker, another long-time assistant at under Brennan at BK, is remaining at Eagle High, where he assisted last year’s team to the 5A State Championship.

Gamber, whose Bishop Kelly football record 224 consecutive game streak as an assistant coach was ended in 2009, is serving as defensive coordinator for Caldwell. The Cougars compete in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference. They open play on Friday, August 27, against the 4A Nampa Bulldogs in Nampa.

Good article in the Idaho Press-Tribune, also the source for the photo above.

Bishop Kelly senior Josh Schaffleld, a standout defensive lineman on the Knights football team, is also a World Champion in wrestling. Schaffeld won the prestigious Cliff Keen Reno World Championship tournament held in Reno, Nevada, earlier this month.
Competing in the 189-pound class for ages 18-and-under, Schaffeld battled through the 32-man bracket to earn the crown. The three-day event included a first round 14-4 decision, a second round win of 6-1 and a 7-2 nod in in the third frame to send him into the Final Four. A dramatic overtime win (4-2) in the semi-finals led to Schaffeld’s opportunity in the Championship match.
Following the initial two periods of that final match the score was locked at 1-1, and overtime seemed likely. However, late in the 3rd period Schaffeld was able to turn his opponent and nail down the victory with a pin. Schaffeld is the first BK athlete to earn the World Champion title in the sport of wrestling. He plans to pursue the sport at the collegiate level following his graduation in May.

Schaffeld, son of BK alum Butch (’79) and Kathi Schaffeld (and brother of outstanding BK athlete Danny ’07), is the first State Champion from Bishop Kelly since 2005. That was the year Andy Silsby defeated teammate Cameron Ogle in the finals of the same 189-pound weight class.

Josh’s win was a fitting end to an outstanding season, and another milestone in the Schaffeld family’s multi-decade involvement in Idaho high school wrestling. And at this year’s District III wrestling tournament, Josh recieved the first place award from his grandfather, Paul Schaffeld, who has been among the leading officials and organizers of Idaho’s prep wrestling scene for many years. In fact, the same opportunity presented itself in 1979 when Paul awarded first place medals to his sons, BK standouts Butch and Christian (’82) in the District finals. Paul Schaffeld was the head referee at the ’79 tournament, and in 2010 he was part of a distinguished group representing the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Head Coach for the Knights this season was Dan Neef, who was assisted by Chad Blue. Junior 145-pounder Butch Hyder also had an outstanding state tournament winning four out of a grueling seven matches and medaling in 6th place. Listed below are the wrestlers who represented BK at this year’s state tournament along with their District tournament result. Congratulations to all involved in the BK wrestling program this season!

Tim Brennan (BK ’77) has been selected as the new head football coach of the Caldwell Cougars, according to the Caldwell School District. Brennan replaces Matt Strong, a longtime Brennan associate who may have a role in the new regime.

“If he has the time and wants to be involved I will definitely want him in the program,” Brennan said of his one-time nemesis when the Knights and Cougars ruled the Southern Idaho Conference. “Matt’s a great coach and I would want to find a role for him, you bet.”

“Football is football and coaching is coaching,” said Brennan when asked about his feelings of patrolling the sidelines for an area team other than BK. “It will be strange to coach against the Knights, but that’s something we’ll deal with later. I’m looking forward to working for the Cougars.”

Brennan will continue working at West Mifflin (PA) High through the end of the school year, but will make a brief trip to Boise and Caldwell in March. He and his wife Denise plan to move into a new home in the Boise Valley in early summer, according to Tim.

“We’re excited to be back with friends and family and all that, but I truly feel this is a coaching opportunity where great things can happen for the Caldwell High community,” said Brennan. “My experience here at West Mifflin has been awesome, and I feel it has helped prepare me for this job at Caldwell. I’m looking forward to working with the students and coaches there to continue Matt’s good work in the football program.”

Denise recently announced her resignation as Executive Director of the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Association. “She’ll be looking for a professional challenge once we get settled,” said Brennan. “We both love big challenges and love to work hard and can’t wait to get started on this next chapter.”

Bleier will address an assembly of all BK students, faculty, staff members and alumni. The event will last approximately one hour and is open to the public. Tickets are not required and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis after the students are seated.

“The Rocky Bleier story is a special one and we’re excited to have him visit our school,” commented BK Principal Bob Wehde. “He is well known for his dynamic speaking and inspirational message and it will be a privilege to welcome him to Bishop Kelly.”

Bleier, a member of Notre Dame’s 1966 national champion squad and former team captain of the Fighting Irish, was drafted into the U.S. Army following his rookie season in the NFL. He served in Vietnam in 1969, where he was wounded in battle and later awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Following his recovery he returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers and was part of four Super Bowl victories for the black and gold. Here are links to more info on Bleier: ROCKY BLEIER INC; STEELERS; ROCKY WIKI.

We can support that, and sending a couple of former Knights to shake hands with President Obama seems like a great way to start 2010.
