Some people never get tired of talking about the time BSU beat Oklahoma. My favorite angle on that big game, played three years ago today, was the fact that Bishop Kelly had TWO alums in the Bronco STARTING LINEUP (Colt Brooks and Tad Miller). And a handful of other former BK guys were in bluenorange that night, playing on special teams, keeping stats, or watching their final game as redshirt freshmen.

TOP TEN GAMES OF THE DECADE: Knights Highlights of the 2000s

In a decade that brought two state championships, Brennan’s 100th win, a 25 game winning streak, and a divine act of deception, it’s difficult to rank the TOP GAMES. But here it is, special thanks to BKfootball.com contributor Andy Brunelle for providing the initial list.

10. Nov. 3, 2006: BK 28 Sandpoint 24 – State Quarterfinals at Sandpoint, a come from behind win turns on the Immaculate Deception. Boy oh boy did that inspired bit of innovation get a reaction. Trip also included the first known print reference to the team as “the University of Bishop Kelly.”

9. Aug. 31, 2001: BK 34 Borah 12 – Inaugural Battle of the Ditchbank as 5A Lions walk to BK. Knights now 4-0 against larger neighbor.

8. Sept. 12, 2003: BK 13 Eagle 14 – At Eagle’s Thunder Stadium underdog BK nearly pulls last minute miracle against 5A powerhouse. BK staple ‘power trey right’ sets up QB keeper for last minute TD. Knights try to throw for two-point conversion, lose by one.

7. Nov. 2, 2001: BK 49 Sandpoint 48 — State Quarterfinal at BK, Knights win on throwback to QB Brooks, missed kick by Sandpoint.

6. Sept. 5, 2003: BK 23 Lake City 6 – Knights upset 2002 5A State Champions at BK in early season non-con action. Knights average 6-yards-per-carry rushing.

5. Nov. 11, 2005: BK 21 Sandpoint 20 — State Semifinals at Sandpoint seems lost until the “Big Play on Pend Oreille,” Hawkins to Stew Tracy for six!

4. Nov. 19, 2004: BK 40 Pocatello 8 – State Championship win at Bronco Stadium was closer than score indicates. Huge BK crowd enjoys hook-and-ladder and other fireworks.

3. Nov. 12, 2004: BK 29 Caldwell 12 — State Semifinals at BK, Knights beat the best Caldwell team in years with strong second half. Two streakers provide comic relief.

2. Nov. 3, 2000: BK 35 Lake City 28 – BK’s biggest playoff upset ever, State Quarterfinal win in Coeur d’Alene over highly-touted Vikings.

1. Nov. 18, 2005: BK 31 Pocatello 29 – The #1 Most Memorable Game of the 2000′s was the 2005 State Championship Game, a tense 31-29 BK win over hometown Pocatello at the MiniDome on the campus of Idaho State University. The win was BK’s 24th consecutive and came against an ultra-talented Indian squad in a hostile environment when the calls and odds seemed stacked against the Knights. The win capped the career of QB Cody Hawkins and some other teammates who never lost a game at BK (2 undefeated years on JV, 2 on varsity) or during Optimist and Junior High football. The now legendary “3rd & 47″ moment became part of BK lore.

MAYOR BIETER TAKES A KNEE: Knight Fullback Schedules Surgery

Former BK fullback and part-time linebacker Dave Bieter is scheduled to undergo total knee replacement surgery next week. Bieter, an outstanding 3-year starter during the Krahn Era, played one season of football at the collegiate level at the College of Saint Thomas in Minnesota. His knee has been an ongoing problem since a serious injury occured during an intramural football game in 1985 during his law school days at the University of Idaho.

Mayor Bieter to undergo knee-replacement surgery

Mayor David Bieter will undergo knee-replacement surgery next week to treat a long-standing problem caused by an injury he incurred playing intramural football in the 1980s.

The surgery will be performed December 15. The Mayor is expected to be out of the office for approximately 2-4 weeks depending on the speed of his recovery. Council President Maryanne Jordan will serve as acting mayor whenever Mayor Bieter is unable to carry out his duties.

HONORS FOR KNIGHTS: ’09 Squad Earns Recognition for Outstanding Season

The Fall 2009 All-Conference Awards for the Southern Idaho Conference were recently announced and BK has a number of players listed. Although the SIC selection process is imperfect, here are the names of the BK players very deserving of recognition:

Honorable Mention: Dom Chumich, Nicko Brady. 2nd Team: Jake Wylie, Butch Hyder, Wil Jaundarlius, Nik Buich, Chris Horne. 1st Team: Nate Lothrop, Antonio Urquidi, Hunter Griffith, Josh Schaffeld, Jake Hardee, Matt Sato. Defensive Player of the Year Cody McCarthy. Co-Coach of the Year Lee Leslie.

SENIOR DAY: Andy Silsby Wrapping Up Career as Bronco

Andy Silsby ’05 becomes the most recent BK grad to complete a full college career on the gridiron as the Boise State Broncos end their regular season. Silsby, an outstanding fullback at BK and special teams performer at BSU, spent this season as an assistant coach due to a knee injury. He has been in the BSU program for five years and saw duty as a backup fullback from time to time.

FORMER COACH UPDATE: Eagle Assistant Jack Parker and 5A Mustangs Win State Finals

Former BK Coach Jack Parker and the Eagle Mustangs recently won the Idaho 5A State Finals. Eagle edged Capital in a spellbinding final at Bronco Stadium, and in the process snagged a new championship ring for Parker. Parker, an assistant at Eagle High, has been a key addition to the staff this season for the Mustangs.

A long-time assistant coach to Tim Brennan at Bishop Kelly, Parker led the Knights as head coach in 2007 and 2008. Parker led BK to the State 4A playoffs during his first year at the helm, where the Knights suffered a narrow 3-0 loss to eventual State Runnerup Nampa.

Former BK Head Coach Tim Brennan (’77) completed his third season at the helm of the West Mifflin Titans by turning the corner in the W-L column. The team finished its rugged Class AAA-Big Seven (Pittsburgh, PA) schedule with a 5-4 mark in 2009, marking one of the first winning records at the school in many years.

Although the Titans missed the playoffs, Brennan and wife Denise have kept the football season alive by attending NFL, NCAA, and area high school games. They recently were asked to pose with ESPN Radio’s Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg while attending a Pittsburgh Steeler game. Good to see Tim in black-and-gold.

KNIGHTS OF NOVEMBER: A Look at BK in Post-Season

Bishop Kelly football has a long tradition of playing in post-season contests, dating back to 1971. There were four seasons during that decade that BK competed in playoff games for the “mythical” A-2 State Championship. Although these games were not sanctioned by the Idaho High School Activities Association, and were only played between the Snake River Valley Conference champ and teams from the Magic Valley (Jerome and Buhl), it was considered a state championship contest back inthe day.

In 1978 the IHSAA finally sanctioned a playoff system for the A-2 classification, and Bishop Kelly was in the tournament with a 9-1 season record. The Knights first-ever official state playoff game was a semi-final match against the Wallace Miners, a game played in five inches of thick snow in the Northern Idaho mining town. BK won 30-21 that day, setting the tone for future Knight victories in IHSAA post-season battles.

BK is now 22-15 in IHSAA playoff games, and 23-18 overall in school history, counting the mythical title games. The Knights have competed in 8 IHSAA State Championship Games, winning three of them.

40 YRS AGO: 1969 Team Went 9-0

This fall marks the 40th Anniversary of Bishop Kelly’s first undefeated season, a 9-0 mark in regular season under Head Coach Chuck Forrestal. The Knights opened the campaign by knocking off Meridian, the only team to defeat BK the previous season. That 19-8 victory was one of two competitive contests for BK that season, the other being a 14-7 win over Vallivue in week five.The talented squad averaged 44.0 points per game, a school record that stood until 2004. BK beat Payette 95-0 that season and had other high scoring wins over Weiser (55-0) and Nyssa (51-0). Opponents scored just three touchdowns against the Knights the entire season. The season ended with a 49-8 win over Burley. There were only nine regular season games scheduled that year and no post-season playoff games were played. It was the final season for Coach Forrestal, who finished with a six-year mark of 45-10-0 (.818). More photos from the Forrestal Era can be seen here.

SATURDAY KNIGHTS: Schaffeld vs. Hyder in Frontier Battle

Bishop Kelly alums Danny Schaffeld ’08 and Brock Hyder ’09 found themselves on the same football field last Saturday — but on opposing sides. Schaffeld, a redshirt freshman offensive tackle for University of Montana-Western, was on his home field in Dillon, Mont., for the Frontier Conference game. Hyder, a true freshman, started at center for Montana State-Northern. Pictured here are Schaffeld (#69) and Hyder (#64) following the game. Western won 24-13. It is believed to be the first time that BK graduates were both in the starting lineups on opposing teams at the collegiate level.
