THIS WEEK: Jerome Tigers at BK on Friday Night to Open Season

Bishop Kelly begins its 48th season of football this Friday night against the Jerome Tigers. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Nick Ysursa Field.  The live radio broadcast will be available online at BKfootball.com, or over the airwaves at KGEM 1140 AM in Boise.  The game marks the return of Head Coach Tim Brennan, who coached the Knights from 1992 to 2006.

BK enters the game ranked 2nd in the Idaho media preseason poll, Jerome is not listed in the top five or among others receiving votes. The Tigers are 0-1 on the season after losing 48-0 last week at Middleton.

The all-time series record between the two teams is tied at 2-2.  The first meeting was during BK’s first season in 1964 when the Knights played a modest 8-game schedule.  The result, a narrow win for Jerome, was countered by a BK win the next year.  The next two meetings were both considered “state championship” games back in the early 1970′s, when the top Snake River Valley team would face the best team from South Central Idaho.  The Knights lost a tight game on a muddy night at BK in 1971, 14-6. (Listen to the radio broadcast of that 1971 game here).

The next year BK beat the Tigers in Jerome 32-8 led by quarterback Mark Luchte, receiver Dan Spears, and a D-line anchored by Chris Bieter and Chris Pitkin.

With the series tied at 2-2, Friday’s rubbermatch has been a long time coming. The two teams have not faced each other in 39 years, 9 months, and 17 days.
