The 47th season of Bishop Kelly Knights football kicks off this week on Friday, September 3, when the Knights travel to Rupert to play the Minico High School Spartans. The radio broadcast of the game can heard worldwide via a live webcast here at BKfootball.com thanks the magic of Fiberpipe Inc. and the BK Alumni Association. It is the third consecutive season that BKfootball.com has provided this service.
The Spartans will be looking for payback from last year’s opening game when the Knights won the opener at home in a 24-0 shutout. The one-sided score belies the season results where both BK and Minico made the state playoffs, and both losing in the first round. Not only that, but Minico is coming off a strong 34-7 season opening win over Pocatello’s Century High School last Friday night.
The Knights come into the game with a #2 ranking in 4A state in the preseason poll released last week. Minico received no votes from sports writers in the poll. You can also find more information on the season outlook for BK.

This is the fourth year running where BK and Minico have played, with Minco winning the first two games before the Knight’s victory last year. The series record between the schools stands at 4-5 in favor of Minico. The first meeting was the opening game in the 1979 season where BK won 19-0, the Knights’ first win in an 8-2 season that was one extra point short of making the playoffs. Minico won the next two games, including the opener in 1981 at BK (26-14) in a year when the Knights would go 9-2 and get to the state semi finals.
The nonconference games have generally been the season opener or second game, the exception being an October 1999 match where the 11-1 Knights executed a punishing 29-12 win on their way to the state A-2 finals. That win turned some heads as Minico was in a higher classification that season.
Prior to the opener on Friday night the BK Freshmen and the JV teams will have their first games, both on Thursday. The game schedule page shows the Freshmen opening at home against Nampa at 4:30 p.m. and the JV squad traveling to Minico for a 7:00 p.m. match.
