WORLD CHAMP: Footballer Schaffeld Earns Wrestling Title in Reno
Bishop Kelly senior Josh Schaffleld, a standout defensive lineman on the Knights football team, is also a World Champion in wrestling. Schaffeld won the prestigious Cliff Keen Reno World Championship tournament held in Reno, Nevada, earlier this month.
Competing in the 189-pound class for
ages 18-and-under, Schaffeld battled through the 32-man bracket to earn the crown. The three-day event included a first round 14-4 decision, a second round win of 6-1 and a 7-2 nod in in the third frame to send him into the Final Four. A dramatic overtime win (4-2) in the semi-finals led to Schaffeld’s opportunity in the Championship match.
Following the initial two periods of that final match the score was locked at 1-1, and overtime seemed likely. However, late in the 3rd period Schaffeld was able to turn his opponent and nail down the victory with a pin. Schaffeld is the first BK athlete to earn the World Champion title in the sport of wrestling. He plans to pursue the sport at the collegiate level following his graduation in May.
