SCHAFFELD WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: BK Wrestler Takes Top Honors
BK senior Josh Schaffled, an all-star performer in the Knights’ football program for four seasons, is now a State Champion wrestler following his march through the 4A bracket at the state tournament. The 189-pounder swept all four matches, with his semifinal contest going into double overtime and his final win a narrow 4-3 victory.

Schaffeld, son of BK alum Butch (’79) and Kathi Schaffeld (and brother of outstanding BK athlete Danny ‘07), is the first State Champion from Bishop Kelly since 2005. That was the year Andy Silsby defeated teammate Cameron Ogle in the finals of the same 189-pound weight class.
Josh’s win was a fitting end to an outstanding season, and another milestone in the Schaffeld family’s multi-decade involvement in Idaho high school wrestling. And at this year’s District III wrestling tournament, Josh recieved the first place award from his grandfather, Paul Schaffeld, who has been among the leading officials and organizers of Idaho’s prep wrestling scene for many years. In fact, the same opportunity presented itself in 1979 when Paul awarded first place medals to his sons, BK standouts Butch and Christian (’82) in the District finals. Paul Schaffeld was the head referee at the ‘79 tournament, and in 2010 he was part of a distinguished group representing the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Head Coach for the Knights this season was Dan Neef, who was assisted by Chad Blue. Junior 145-pounder Butch Hyder also had an outstanding state tournament winning four out of a grueling seven matches and medaling in 6th place. Listed below are the wrestlers who represented BK at this year’s state tournament along with their District tournament result. Congratulations to all involved in the BK wrestling program this season!
